The Moore County Board of Education is pleased to announce the selection and appointment of Dr. Robert "Bob" Grimesey as the next Superintendent of Moore County Schools. Dr. Grimesey will take office on July 1, 2014.
During the search process, the Moore County Board of Education carefully reviewed applications and supporting documentation from a diverse field of excellent candidates. Although many qualified candidates applied, the board felt that Dr. Grimesey's depth and breadth of experience, in addition to his passion and dedication to student learning would best serve the Moore County students, staff, and community for years to come. The board is confident that he will lead Moore County Schools to even higher achievement.
Dr. Grimesey comes to Moore County with over 30 years' experience in education – 13 of those years serving as a superintendent. He currently serves as the Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools in northern Virginia, a position he has held since July of 2009. Prior to his current position, he served for 8 years as the Superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools in the mountains of Virginia. From 1988 to 2001, Dr. Grimesey worked his way up from Assistant Principal to Principal to Director of Grants and Partnerships in Rockingham County Public Schools in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He began his educational career as a high school Social Studies teacher in Virginia after spending his first few years after college covering local government and sports for the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record.
During his 5 years leading the Orange County Public Schools, Dr. Grimesey has been instrumental in improving student achievement by creating a culture of accountability, setting clear and focused goals, and employing a consistent, collaborative approach. The school system went from 7 out of 8 schools failing to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 2008 to all schools meeting Annual Measureable Objectives (formerly AYP) in 2012. Dr. Grimesey is known as a leader who sets high standards and expectations for himself and his staff. He has been described as professional, ethical, decisive, intellectual, and organized. He is also an excellent communicator who will build strong relationships with school system staff, students, and community members.
Dr. Grimesey has an impressive educational background, including a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts and a Masters of Education from James Madison University. He obtained his Doctorate of Education from the University of Virginia.
During his prestigious career, Dr. Grimesey has often been recognized for his achievements and leadership. Notably, he has twice been named as a regional Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), in 2007 and 2012. He was recognized by the Curry School of Education (at UVA) with the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2012 and was named the Virginia PTA Child Advocate of the Year in 2010. He has served in various leadership roles for numerous local and statewide professional organizations. He is also a published author in educational journals and newsletters, has presented at many state-level educational conferences, and has testified multiple times before state legislative committees.
Dr. Grimesey greatly looks forward to the opportunity to lead the Moore County Schools. He and his wife Carol have been married for 32 years and have 3 children. Their family is very excited about becoming a part of the Moore County community. Dr. Grimesey has issued the following statement expressing his excitement and optimism about the position:
