(Carthage) – A project to improve driving conditions for several Moore County roadways is on its way because of a contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction will take place along 30 miles of roadway composed of four sections of U.S. 15/501, two sections of N.C. 22 and N.C. 5, one section of N.C. 705 and six sections of secondary roads. The sections of U.S. 15/501 are from Carthage south to N.C. 73.

Riley Paving Inc., which entered a low bid of $6.3 million, can begin the work July 1. The project completion date is Nov. 1, 2020.

Lanes on N.C. 22 between N.C. 24 and Putnam Church Road north of Carthage, and on N.C. 5 between Blake Boulevard and Morganton Road in Pinehurst cannot be closed on weekdays from 7:00-9:00 a.m. Lane closures are also not allowed on West Pennsylvania Avenue between N.C. 2 and Southwest Broad Street in Southern Pines on weekdays from 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 2:00-4:00 p.m.
