The Southern Pines Town Council voted unanimously Monday to appoint Reverend Dr. Paul Green Murphy to the unexpired Council term that opened with the unfortunate passing of Reverend Fred Walden. Dr. Murphy will be sworn in at the regularly scheduled Work Session of Town Council on Monday, November 26 and serve the remainder of the term ending in December 2019.
Dr. Murphy serves as the head pastor of Trinity AME Zion Church in Southern Pines. He also serves as patriarch of The Murphy Family, a musical group that includes his wife, Sharon, and their four children. He attended Hood Theological Seminary, and holds a Master's of Divinity from Duke University having completed his undergraduate degree in music theory and composition at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
Dr. Murphy was selected from amongst a pool of eight candidates following a series of interviews the Council conducted. Following initial Letters of Interest, candidates were given an opportunity to introduce themselves followed by a series of questions covering their perceived strengths, priorities, and thoughts regarding service to the Community.
A number of the candidates already not on Boards or Commissions expressed an interest in serving in alternative capacities should they not be selected, and a number of items and ideas brought forth during the interviews will be further discussed by the Town Council in upcoming meetings for potential action.
