A large sinkhole has caused Hoffman Road in southern Moore County to be totally closed to through traffic near the county line.

The sinkhole is located south of Thunder Road before reaching the Moore County and Richmond County line.

A driver reported the sinkhole to 911 around 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon. Firefighters were dispatched to assess the situation, and found that the road was collapsing with a hole that was obviously very large beside of a drainage pipe that runs under the road. It appeared that beavers had clogged the pipe backing up water on one side of the road, and eroding around the pipe.

The NC Department of transportation was called to the scene, and they closed the road to through traffic until repairs can be made. Firefighters remained on the scene directing traffic around the growing hole, until the NC Transportation could arrive at the location. If you are traveling Hoffman Road towards Richmond County, Thunder Road is as far as you will be able to go before needing to detour.

Hoffman Road is closed at Thunder Road in Moore County and at US Highway 1 in Richmond County. According to one official we spoke with the road may be closed for a period of 1 to 2 weeks while repairs are made.

Responding to the incident to direct traffic were units with Pinebluff Fire Department, and West End Fire & Rescue.
