A 27 year old Pembroke man died in a single vehicle accident in Southern Pines overnight.
Emergency responders were called to a vehicle that had ran off of the road and hit a tree on East Connecticut Avenue near Ox Ridge Lane just after 1:30 am with reports of the driver possibly being trapped in the vehicle.
The first arriving emergency units confirmed that the male victim who was the only occupant in the Ford Focus passenger car was deceased at the scene of the accident.
Firefighters had to use specialized hydraulic powered rescue tools to remove the roof and two of the doors from the vehicle to free the victim.
East Connecticut Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions until just before 3:30 am when the roadway was cleared and reopened to normal traffic.
Responding to this incident were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the NC State Highway Patrol.
Release of the victim’s identification is pending notification of family members of the victim. We will update readers with additional information as it becomes available to release.
The accident remained under investigation by the NC State Highway Patrol as of this report.
This was the 10th fatal accident on Moore County roadways during the last 3 month period with the busy holiday traffic season still ahead.
