A 27 year old Pembroke man died in a single vehicle accident in Southern Pines overnight.

Emergency responders were called to a vehicle that had ran off of the road and hit a tree on East Connecticut Avenue near Ox Ridge Lane just after 1:30 am with reports of the driver possibly being trapped in the vehicle.

The first arriving emergency units confirmed that the male victim who was the only occupant in the Ford Focus passenger car was deceased at the scene of the accident.

Firefighters had to use specialized hydraulic powered rescue tools to remove the roof and two of the doors from the vehicle to free the victim.

East Connecticut Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions until just before 3:30 am when the roadway was cleared and reopened to normal traffic.
