One person was killed, and a second person was injured after a two-vehicle accident between Southern Pines and Vass in the early morning hours Saturday.
Emergency responders were dispatched at 1:47 am to US Highway 1 near the intersection with North May Street for a reported serious vehicle accident.
The accident involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck and a Hyundai Elantra passenger car.
According to officials at the scene the accident took place as the passenger car was traveling northbound on US Highway 1, when the pickup truck came off of North May Street and ran a stop sign striking the car in the side before both vehicles came to a stop in the southbound lanes of US Highway 1.
The driver of the passenger car was transported by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. A female passenger in the car was deceased at the scene upon the arrival of emergency responders.
The deceased victim was identified by authorities as 24 year old Shamiya Jennings of Sanford.
Neither occupant of the F150 pickup truck required transport to the hospital.
The driver of the Ford F-150 was detained by law-enforcement officers at the scene of the accident under suspicion of possible driving while impaired.
One northbound lane of US Highway 1 was closed to traffic until just before 3:30 am by the accident with both southbound lanes of US Highway 1 closed to all traffic until just after 3:40 am before reopening to normal operations.
Responding were units with Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriffs Department, NC State Highway Patrol, and NC State Medical Examiner’s Office
