(Carthage) - On April 25, 2019, a Moore County Jury convicted Justin Edward Chriscoe, of Seagrove, of Felony Discharge a Weapon into Occupied Property and Assault With Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury for shooting Matthew Munz on September 10, 2017.

Prior to the shooting, Chriscoe and Munz had been arguing via text messages. Munz drove to Chriscoe’s neighborhood to confront Chriscoe. Chriscoe pulled up in his truck. Chriscoe told Munz to get out of his truck. Munz was unarmed. As Munz was getting out of his truck, Chriscoe fired at him with a .45 pistol approximately 5-6 times. Munz was hit three times. Munz was airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center for emergency treatment. The case was investigated by the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.

Jury selection began on April 22, 2019. After the State presented its case, Chriscoe testified that the shooting was in self-defense. The jury received the case for deliberations on April 25, 2019, and quickly returned verdicts of Guilty to Felony Discharge a Weapon into Occupied Property and Assault With Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury.

The Defendant received two active sentences of 29-47 months each in the Department of Corrections. The State was represented by Assistant District Attorneys Peter Strickland and Virginia Ann Lifchez.
