My Funny Valentine; even if Rodgers and Hart had only written this one song their legacy would have been cemented into the Great American Songbook. But these two young Jewish boys who met at Columbia went on to produce more than 500 songs, 28 stage musicals and 8 movies, writing songs that continue to be recorded and enjoyed today. If you’re a Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett fan, you probably heard or watched their remarkable recording of Lady Is a Tramp. Glee fans enjoyed a show-stopping rendition of the same song. Today, Michael Buble and Dianna Krall fans thrill to the same Rogers and Hart tunes that Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald popularized. On April 25th, the Great Room at Weymouth will swing with these melodies as John Hatcher and Friends present another concert in the Great American Songbook Series.

John Hatcher hopes that this will attract a broad crowd of both mature and younger attendees, as this music has become a staple for local schools. “Moore County Schools now have in the curriculum, music programs with classes of jazz band and swing choirs. Much of the music is from the Songbook. In the past year and a half, popular Weymouth concerts of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and now Rodgers and Hart coming up on April 25th, have contributed to the perpetuation of the American Songbook through enthusiastic participation and attendance.”

The beautiful spring evening will include wine and light hors d oeuvres, with full tables and single seatings available by reservation. John Hatcher and Friends is a quintet of local and regional musicians featuring the beautiful vocalist Meghan Casey, saxophonist John Hatcher, percussionist Tim Haley, bass player Larry Arnold and pianist Jack Krupicka. A small dance floor is available to enjoy swaying to these marvelous rhythms.

The 7:00 pm event is a fundraiser supporting the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization and home to the NC Literary Hall of Fame. Tickets are $50 members and $60 nonmembers and are available online at and table reservations are available through the office at 910.692.6261.
