Derrick “Derry” Lane Thompson, 73 of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2017 at Reid Heart Center in Pinehurst, after bravely fighting lung cancer. His strength and humor were a blessing to all around him and shone through to the very end of his life.
Born on November 21, 1943 in Waynesville, North Carolina. Derry was a graduate of Vass Lakeview High School and was a standout in sports. He was a member of his high school basketball and baseball teams. The love of sports carried over to his adult life by his participation in community softball and basketball. Derry’s passion for sports evolved into many years of golf rounds at courses throughout Moore County. His favored courses were any he played. He found much enjoyment in his final days of play with his friends and his membership at Deercroft Golf Club. When he wanted quiet time he would retrieve his fishing pole and head to the closest pond for relaxation.
Derry worked for over 45 years in the ceramic tile business. He was well known in the area for his knowledge, talent and skill in executing detailed ceramic tile designs. In 1983 he started Thompson Tile Company and worked until his retirement in 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Jennie Thompson, and his brothers, David and Joel. Derry had a special caring relationship with his mother-in-law, Ella Mae Lamb Maples, who also proceeded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Linda Maples Thompson; three children, Carey Henderson (Bobby), Toby Thompson, and Jeffrey Thompson; two sisters, Marion Wilson of Lakeview and Kathy McBride of CA.
